NEIGHBORHOOD

PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS

Bordered both by Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Lefferts Gardens (PLG) is a secluded, comparatively small neighborhood in central Brooklyn. It is sandwiched between Crown Heights to the north and Flatbush to the south, and in the past was oftentimes overlooked by those looking for a home. And yet, it was this very attribute, along with its prime park location, that has gradually transformed PLG into the desirable location it is today.    

In the 17th and 18th centuries the entire neighborhood—along with much of the borough—was marked by large family farmsteads and bucolic woods and pastures. The Lefferts were one such family, and in 1893 it was James Lefferts that decided to divide his portion of land into six hundred home lots, which became Lefferts Manor. This reorganization came with certain conditions, however, and it is because of those conditions that nearly all of the lots have, to this day, remained occupied by single-family homes that bear the distinct architectural style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rest of the neighborhood was developed in a similar manner, but with more multi-family homes and several apartment buildings. Today, with the neighborhood becoming a popular choice for new and growing families, development continues to change the area around Lefferts Manor.

Flatbush, Nostrand, and New York Avenues serve as the main neighborhood corridors for restaurants and shops, and convenient subway stops (B/Q/2/5) at four separate locations within PLG boundaries make it easy to get to and from Manhattan. But the main draw will always be the lush, open spaces of Prospect Park.
